چکیده

We shall consider a first order language with equality, and the corresponding structures. Reduced products {powers) and Horn sentences are defined in [4, pp. 199, 211]. An Vn sentence is a prenex sentence whose prefix consists of a block of universal quantifiers, followed by a block of existential quantifiers, followed by another block of universal quantifiers, and so on n times; an sentences are defined dually. An EC (HC, VnC) is the class of all models of an elementary sentence (Horn sentence, Vn sentence), and an EC A (HCA, VWCA) is the class of all models of a set of elementary sentences (Horn sentences, Vn sentences).

Lower Bounds on Syntactic Logic Expressions for Optimization Problems and Duality using Lagrangean Dual to characterize optimality conditions

In this paper, we prove lower bounds on the logical expressibility of optimization problems. There is a significant difference between the expressibilities of decision problems and optimization problems. This is similar to the difference in computation times for the two classes of problems; for example, a 2SAT Horn formula can be satisfied in polynomial time, whereas the optimization version in...

A Most General Reenement Operator for Reduced Sentences

Many learning systems use the space of logic formulas as the search space of hypotheses. To build eecient systems, the set of rst order logic formulas can be reduced in many ways. Most systems restrict themselves to (subsets of) Horn clauses. In this paper we investigate the space of reduced rst order sentences, which has the same expressive power as an arbritrary rst order logic. Shapiro 6] ha...

Expressibility at the machine level versus structure level: ESO universal Horn Logic and the class P

Consider decision problems derived from optimization problems. For problems in this category, we show that they cannot be expressed in existential second order (ESO) logic with a first order part that is universal Horn (or simply, ESO Π1 Horn) at the structure level, as opposed to machine level. This is true even when we consider ordered structures. We show that an NP-complete problem (Maximum ...

Deciding Consistency of Databases Containing Defeasible and Strict Information

We propose a norm of consistency for a mixed set X of defeasible and strict sen tences, based on a probabilistic interpre tation of these sentences. This norm es tablishes a clear distinction between knowl edge bases depicting exceptions and those containing outright contradictions. We then define a notion of entailment based also on probabilistic considerations and provide a characterizati...
